This book will be called, Memories of the Great Depression: a Time Remembered. It will contain the personal accounts of 24 people who lived through the days of Americas Great Depression of the 1930s. It will tell what life was like for the average American in the years between 1929 and 1941. Gathering these stories and recording them in print has become a labor of love for me.
My first chapter will tell of life and death within a black family, and of the importance of their church within their lives, as well as life in their community. In another chapter, we see a family struggle to survive following the death of the husband/father in an industrial accident. In a third, we will see the doctor implanting a tube to drain the lungs of a dangerously sick child, in an operation performed on the family's kitchen table. The stories are stories of Americans when neighbors, and not the government, were the "first responders."
